is very active in applied research and in developing new products. We are also working
with several businesses and government agencies in EMF
characterization and measurement.

UC Berkeley Childhood Leukemia Study Residential
Wire Coding of Residences
This project involves the collection of field data
necessary to determine the Wertheimer - Leeper wire code classification
for over 500 study residences. Enertech field technicians will visit the
residences located within the San Francisco Bay Area and
Sacramento/Central Valley/Fresno areas in 2002. A database of residential
field data will be developed and submitted to UC Berkeley. A proposed
follow-on project in 2003 could include a second residential visit to
collect ground current measurements and other data parameters.
EPRI Contact Current Meter Development
EPRI is working to explore the relationship between
contact currents received in residences and occupational settings with
magnetic field exposure indices. This work requires the development of
unique instrumentation to measure human exposures to contact currents.
Enertech electrical design engineers and metering technicians have
developed a meter which measures contact currents from the four
extremities of a person (one sensor on each wrist and ankle). This meter
records voltage differences above a preset threshold and records this data
along with a body voltage reference. The device is presently planned to be
utilized in the EPRI – NIOSH – SCE Utility Workers Study in 2002.
EPRI Contact Current Hypothesis Study
Research has suggested that contact current may
be an exposure that is relevant to the association between magnetic fields
and childhood leukemia. EPRI is working to measure contact voltage and
characterize its relationship to magnetic fields as measured in a sampling
of single family residences. Enertech is providing the measurement
instrumentation, training, and technical assistance to the measurement
crews, performing data analysis and computer modeling of residential
environments, and preparation of a technical report. This work is
scheduled for completion in 2002.
